How to Convey Authority In Your Niche, Even If Just Starting Out, Part 2

by Wolf Benedict on January 5, 2010

In the first part of this series, I discussed several ways to convey authority online. In this article, I will explain a few more.

1) Visibility is king. The more visible you are, the more trust you gain. When you are social, public, visible – you gain automatic trust because it’s YOU out there and not just words on a screen or lectures in a newsletter/forum. You have become personally identifiable and this breeds trust.

2) Be visible in multiple venues. The internet as we know it today affords many opportunities to show yourself and your wares. Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Yahoo Groups – are the major venues people are using to communicate. If you wish to communicate authority, you should strive to show up in all of these venues:

A) Video
B) Articles
C) Audios
D) Blog Posts
E) Forums
F) Facebook
E) Twitter

The more venues in which you are visible, the more your credibility goes up. Since you have shown up in various different areas, people will think “Wow, this guy is EVERYWHERE” and the chances they think you are a huckster decrease dramatically.

Think of celebrities – why are they popular? Is it because they are celebrities or because they are visible? They first got famous because they were visible. It’s an interesting psychological attribute – we label highly visible people with authority.

3) This was mentioned briefly above, but provide solutions in forums and social media websites. Give your advice, provide solutions, be of service to people in these areas. You can do this via video, audio, or articles as I have mentioned above. I’ve had many people contact me through forums and social media sites asking me questions, looking for solutions. And many of these have turned into paying leads for my business.

In the next post, I will discuss what NOT to do when conveying authority in your niche. You will want to pay attention to these because they can nullify all of the pro-active tips I’ve already mentioned.

I recommend is teaching them interpersonal skills- such as how to be an effective listener, verbal & non-verbal communication, "roadblocks in communication" and empathetic listening-empathetic formula.

(Roadblocks in communication are ineffective ways of responding to another person. They block the communication process rather than facilitate it.)

Matt Lehman’s big idea: “Find your ‘in’ — your way to start the conversation with customers.” Matt’s case study covers how Progressive is using Twitter during natural disasters to share relevant information, how they’re tracking their social media success via the Net Promoter Score, and how in the early days, showing leadership that social media really worked for customer service was important to getting their program off the ground.

Hey dude let me say I understand where you're coming from. I tend to be somewhat shy (self-conscious may be a better term) in public or when I'm with people I don't know well.

One thing is that your personality will "develop" (as you call it) as you get older. As I get older I've become much better in conversations, situations are less awkward, and I'm not as nervous around people I'm not super-familiar with.

Another thing to remember is that alot of it (not all but alot) is in your head. For instance, you may notice a silly mistake in how you say something and get all nervous. It's easy to assume the other person noticed too, but many times they won't. That's not the best example but it illustrates my point that alot of problems that you may have (in conversations of whatever) are probably observed more by you than by the person you're talking to. Now this isn't ALL the time, but much more than you realize I bet.

I'm a Christian so for me it's helpful to remember that God had me come into this world a certain way on purpose. He didn't make any in my personality at all. Any problems in my personality (anxiety or whatever) are a result of the negative effects of sin entering the world way back in the past. Everything else though God put into my personality on purpose.

Anyways, just a few tips that I hope you at least find encouraging. Good luck man. I'm going to pray for you right now, hope you don't mind.

Coaching can be very helpful for self-discipline, Mr Perks said, as you will be taught how to take responsibility for changing your own behaviour. When coaching executives, he said, “we ask what behaviours they want to be different, what outcomes they want from coaching and how this will be measured”. 10 Communicate with colleagues. I think on this question from a business perspective. A good manager is someone who has worked on the floor/field and can have a comprehensive perspective on the business.
Humility and education I think are essential.
You can't lead well if you have never followed.

Guts. You need to keep the big picture in mind and not be afraid to make changes necessary even if it means loosing some of your support/friends.

A poor manager is one that cannot fire the incompetent worker because of personal association.

Good luck with your paper. : )

[Please subscribe for rapid analysis and focusing on the key developments.] By Barry Rubin Iran’s government announces it will build ten new facilities to make enriched uranium, defying the United States and the UN. U.S. reaction so far? Please please talk with us . This is the moment for the president to make that “My fellow Americans…” getting tough and imposing high sanctions speech, showing leadership and urging Europe to follow him. Why is it one doubts that will happen? It’s getting pretty obvious that Iran doesn’t want to make nice no matter how hard the West and particularly President Barack Obama tries. There’s a broader lesson here: if you apologize, they take it as weakness. If you take too long to react, they use it as an opportunity to advance. If you make a concession they demand more. If you pass a resolution, they laugh in your face. At some point in history, perhaps Western leaders, academics, and intellectuals will understand this. How about today? After all, the…

"Proud" with vocalist Heather Small (I don't know if she WROTE it but she performs it.) It appears on the "Queer As Folk" soundtrack so that kind of implies self-esteem and empowerment for gays but the song itself it not that specific so it could be used for ANY self-esteem/empowerment purpose. :-)

McCain disrupted the process. There was a bill written ready to be voted on. He flew into town and without even reading the bill … rallied the Republican base and told them NOT to vote for the bill. He used the meeting at the White House as a Photo Op. He said absolutely nothing in that meeting.

McCain has made more enemies, than friend on Capitol Hill this week. Lots of people worked very hard last week to write a bipartisan bill … and now McCain blows it up … without even reading the bill.

Will the new prime minister, David Cameron, open the floor to new proposals – such as mandatory carbon sequestration? One of the first issues David Cameron highlighted on which he agreed with Nick Clegg was climate change. Was this because they could both say “I agree with Ed”? I hope not. Not that I have anything against Ed Miliband, one of the brightest stars of the outgoing cabinet, but he inherited a climate policy dating all the way back to John Prescott that amounted to “Copenhagen or bust”. The result, as you will recall from last December, was bust. The overarching goal of the outgoing government’s climate change policy was to secure a global deal to reduce the rate of greenhouse gas emissions. As Copenhagen approached, the policy became ever more focused: support the EU on legally binding emission targets for 2020. With UK emissions comprising around 2% of the total, everyone knows that domestic climate policy is just about showing leadership: the UK Climate Change Act won’t,…

“PeppermintPig said: “The 10th amendment leaves the matter of immigration to the states. The Federal Government has no constitutional authority to establish immigration policy.” Eh? The Tenth Amendment says, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” U.S. Const., amend. X. Therefore, we must look to see if the power to establish immigration laws are “delegated to the United States by the Constitution.” Id. We can find this in Article I, § 8, which states in part: “The Congress shall have power . . . to establish a uniform rule of naturalization . . . .” U.S. Const., art. I, § 8. It seems therefore that the states have *no* power “to establish a . . . rule of naturalization,” which, by consequence must include rules of immigration. It is under this power that Congress acts. By enacting the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, Pub. L. No. 89-236, 79 Stat. 911…”
