The Two-Word Phrase That Destroys Worlds

by Wolf Benedict on February 13, 2010

So you have dreams, goals, aspirations. You want success, and who doesn’t?

On your road to enjoying success, you’ll encounter bumps, potholes, and detours. It is inevitable in any worthy endeavor.

However, wouldn’t it be nice to minimize these occurrences, or at least be able to deal with them swiftly and effectively when they arise?

Before you can do that, you’ll need to address two tiny words that destroy worlds. What words are these? It comes in this simple, sinister phrase:

“Yeah, but…”

Looks innocent? It’s not. It is a destroyer of worlds, a stealer of dreams, a way to keep the carrot on the rope inches from your face on the chain of eternal struggle and strife.

This one phrase will KILL any chance you have of becoming successful. It also betrays a deeper mentality or set of ideas you have about yourself and your potential for success.

Broken down, you can even say “but” is one of the most dangerous words we have on the planet.

Why, you may be asking. That sounds a little extreme. Let’s take a closer look at the phrase and what it implies on a larger scale.

Let’s take a great example from real life. I have a good friend named Fred. I’ve known this gentleman since college. You could certainly call him my best friend, even though I don’t like to put people on scales like that. In any case, he’s charming, loyal, funny and a decent, hardworking human being.

Now Fred had a goal of meeting more women. We would have frequent telephone calls about the “fairer sex” and how to meet them. Oftentimes during these conversations, I would hear my good buddy explain how he would like to have a certain type of girl…

And you know that tone of voice someone uses when they’re about to say “but” or even “yeah, but” ?

This was one of those cases. He said “Ya know, Wolf, I’d really like to meet more women… but…”

So I’d listen and then give him some tips on how to do it. He’d listen appreciably, then say…

“I hear what you’re saying… but…”

Can you see what the word “but” really does? In the above scenario, the word “but” really means this:

“I didn’t hear a word you just said. My situation is different. My situation is totally unique! In essence, I DON’T want to meet more women! I’m investing in my ‘buts’ rather than taking action to achieve what I’d like to have.”

That’s what “but” does – completely stops your goal from materializing by rationalizing your circumstances. Behind that ”but” is usually fear and all it does is STOP you from achievement. Couldn’t be any more simple than that.

I even went so far as to say above that “yeah, but” and it’s ilk destroys worlds. If you have a vision of a goal, that is a new world for you. “But” will butt your goals OUT of existence, thereby “destroying” your world.

See?

How to get past it?

First, realize that “yeah, but” is just a story you put in your head, nothing more. It’s something you made up based on your limited experience of how the world works. Do you know everything? Do you absolutely know that you can’t achieve something?

Of course not! So stop rationalizing towards that end! Quit being a Butthead! Get rid of your ‘buts!’

Another great way is to see what ‘but’ is costing you. It’s costing you your GOALS. That’s a hefty price once you see past your rationalizations.

So no more buts from this day forth. The only ‘but’ you should have in your life is the one you sit on.

Many people suggest "Introducing NLP: Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing People" by Joseph O'Connor and John Seymour.

However, this book was published in the early 1990's and I have found it to be heavy reading at times.

A more recent book "Live Your Dreams Let Reality Catch Up: NLP and Common Sense for Coaches, Managers and You" by Roger Ellerton is a very easy and enjoyable read. It covers all of NLP that a beginner needs to know and then some. I highly recommend it.

NEWBURYPORT – No matter how bright the winter sunshine, when the mercury crouches toward the bottom of the thermometer, it’s hard to muster enthusiasm for an outdoor foray. So we look for motivation, and we couldn’t resist the Saturday Birding program (“What’s That Bird?”) at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center here at the mouth of the Merrimack River.

Of all the ridiculous rationalizations that we’ve seen peddled to justify opposing the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” this one takes the cake:

The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Tuesday that he thought the military should keep its ban on openly gay service members in part because he did not want to open a national discussion about homosexuality. The chairman, Representative Ike Skelton, a conservative Missouri Democrat, said he thought the debate in Congress over the proposed repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy might force families to explain homosexuality to their children. “What do mommies and daddies say to their 7-year-old child?” Mr. Skelton asked reporters at a news media breakfast.

Is this really how the freaking chairman of the House Armed Services Committee makes his decisions about military policy? On how it’s going to play with the elementary school crowd?

Stop hiding behind kids, Ike.

Failure is actually one of the best ways to learn it. It’s the same way we learn to walk and talk when we’re toddlers. We stumble and stutter until we get it right. Just as you wouldn’t expect a white belt in Karate to be able to break a brick, you also wouldn’t expect a first-time public speaker to be as polished as a pro. But sadly, people demand such a level of performance of themselves, expecting that if they’re going to speak publicly, they’d better be outstanding. And since this isn’t going to happen, it generates fear. But the fear largely goes away if you set realistic expectations and head up to the lectern expecting to stink your first few times.
